Hi, I’m Celeste from Protea Movement Studio.
Today, I want to share a little bit about one of our core yoga styles—Vinyasa, also known as “Flow” yoga. For some, especially those new to yoga, the word Vinyasa can sound intimidating or unfamiliar. I want to explain just how transformative this practice can be—for your body, your mind, and your breath.
First, a Quick Look Back
Last month, we explored Yin Yoga, our “Settle” format. Yin is all about slowing down your nervous system and easing into deep, passive stretches. It’s gentle, introspective, and helps soothe your fight-or-flight response. Flow yoga works with the nervous system too, though in a different way—it activates and strengthens you from the inside out.
My Journey with Flow Yoga
I started yoga years ago with a Flow class. Honestly, I began for the physical benefits—I had a curved spine from scoliosis and was constantly in pain. On a dare from a friend, I gave yoga a try because I was tired of hurting all the time and my back felt weak.
At first, it was really difficult. Flow yoga requires muscular support, especially from the core and back. I cried during those early classes. But I stuck with it. Over time, my flexibility improved, strength built up, and eventually—my back pain began to fade. That was my first “aha” moment.
Later, I discovered something deeper: the mental shift that happens when you start to connect breath to movement. Instead of getting lost in thought spirals or self-judgment, you begin to focus. You start to move with your breath. That changes everything.
What Does “Vinyasa” Actually Mean?
At its core, Vinyasa means “breath connected to movement.” That’s it. You don’t need to memorize Sanskrit names or move fast. Just start by noticing your breath. Then, add movement to it—maybe slow, maybe strong, but always intentional.
Here’s a simple example:
Inhale, raise your arms overhead.
Exhale, bring your hands to heart center.
That’s Flow.
Eventually, you may build into more complex movements—perhaps Warrior II, then Humble Warrior, then back up to standing. But it all stems from breath. Breath first, then movement.
The Power of Breath
In Flow classes, we use breath techniques like Ujjayi breath, a soft, ocean-like breath that builds internal heat and focus. You might start sweating—not because you're pushing hard, but because your body is heating up naturally from that breath and movement connection.
Sometimes, we need physical movement to quiet mental chatter. That’s the power of Flow. And when it gets tough—when your breath becomes jagged or your mind starts racing—we always invite you to pause. Take a child’s pose. Reconnect with your breath. That is the practice.
You don’t have to keep up with the class. There’s no need to perform or perfect. Just breathe.
Flow is for Every Body
I understand that Vinyasa can seem intimidating if all you’ve seen are fast-paced, sweaty classes. But Flow can also be slow. You can begin seated, simply moving your arms with your breath.
Inhale, right ear to right shoulder.
Exhale, lift the head back up.
That’s Flow, too.
At Protea Movement Studio, we make Flow yoga accessible for everyone. Whether it’s your first class or your 500th, you’re welcome here. We offer different levels, from steady-paced classes to more dynamic options like our Swift class. No matter the format, we encourage you to make it your own.
The Internal Practice
Yoga isn’t just about touching your toes or nailing a handstand. It’s about calming the fluctuations of your mind (as the yoga sutras teach us). Flow offers a beautiful path to that inner stillness.
Yes, your body will get stronger. Your spine will feel more supported. You’ll build strength with every twist, bend, and balance. More importantly, you’ll start to feel centered, calm, and energized—all at once.
