Hi I am Dr. Danny Clark, Director of Orthobiologics here at the Protea Performance Center. Today I want to talk about a tool I use every single day in practice. It is called ultrasound. That is the machine you might see behind me in the clinic, and it plays a crucial role in both diagnosis and treatment.
What Is Ultrasound and Why It Matters
Ultrasound is an incredible imaging tool that allows us to see soft tissues in real time. This includes tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joint spaces. We can also detect swelling or fluid buildup inside a joint. What makes ultrasound so valuable is its precision. It lets us view structures at a very fine level, sometimes down to the submillimeter, helping us detect injuries that may not even show up on an MRI.
For example, when someone has shoulder pain, we often look at the rotator cuff and specifically the supraspinatus tendon. This is one of the most commonly injured areas in the shoulder. With ultrasound, I can visualize even the smallest microtears or partial thickness tears, which allows for a more accurate diagnosis and a better treatment plan. In many cases, ultrasound can actually provide more clarity than an MRI or help supplement MRI findings that may be unclear.
Ultrasound for Injection Accuracy
Another reason ultrasound is such a powerful tool is that it allows for guided injections. This is something not all clinics offer, but it makes a big difference in both patient outcomes and comfort. Image guided injections use real time imaging to show exactly where the needle is going. Whether it is into a joint, a tendon, or the site of an injury, ultrasound ensures the treatment is going exactly where it needs to go.
Take the AC joint in the shoulder as an example. It is a very small joint, and accurately placing a needle into it without imaging is difficult. In one study, practitioners were asked to place dye into the AC joint without using any imaging guidance. The results showed they were successful only about forty five percent of the time. Imagine paying for an injection and having less than a fifty percent chance of it reaching the right place. That would be like ordering food at a restaurant and having the server say, "Let us flip a coin to see if you actually get what you ordered." No one would accept that in daily life, and we should not accept it in medicine either.
What to Ask Your Provider
If you are considering regenerative medicine or any injection based treatment, always ask your provider if they use imaging guidance. Whether it is ultrasound or fluoroscopy, these tools ensure that your care is precise, effective, and targeted. It is one of the most important questions you can ask to protect your investment and your health.
At Protea Performance Center, we proudly offer ultrasound guided injections as part of our commitment to high quality patient care. It is one of my favorite tools in the clinic because of the clarity and confidence it brings to both diagnosis and treatment.
